How ISA Transfers Work

Learn how the official ISA transfer process works and how existing ISA savings may be transferred between providers.
An ISA transfer allows eligible customers to move existing ISA savings from one provider to another using the official ISA transfer process.
Understanding how ISA transfers work can help you become more familiar with the process before transferring an ISA.
What is an ISA transfer?
An ISA transfer is the official process used to move existing ISA savings between ISA providers.
When completed in accordance with HMRC ISA rules, the transfer is designed to preserve the ISA's tax-efficient status.
How does an ISA transfer work?
The ISA transfer process generally involves the following steps:
1. Choose an ISA provider
Select the ISA you wish to transfer your existing ISA savings into.
2. Complete an ISA transfer application
Your new provider will ask you to complete an ISA transfer request.
3. Providers arrange the transfer
The new provider contacts your existing ISA provider to arrange the transfer.
4. Funds are transferred
Your ISA savings are transferred directly between providers using the official ISA transfer process.
Do ISA transfers affect your ISA allowance?
Official ISA transfers generally do not count as new ISA subscriptions and therefore do not normally use your annual ISA allowance.
New money deposited into an ISA during the current tax year continues to count towards your annual ISA allowance.
Can all ISAs be transferred?
Many ISA products can be transferred, although the availability of full or partial transfers depends on:
- HMRC ISA rules
- The ISA product
- Individual provider terms and conditions
Always review the provider's product information before submitting a transfer request.
How long does an ISA transfer take?
Transfer times vary depending on:
- the provider
- the ISA type
- whether additional information is required
Your provider will usually keep you informed throughout the transfer process.
